This alluring lagoon along the Gulf of Mexico between the sand dunes of La Barra and the foothills of
the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas offers a bounty of enjoyable and educational opportunities - and the fish,
shrimp and crabs are as fresh as can be.

Access from Catemaco is via a paved road, 12 miles, which is naturally graced with assorted
potholes and numerous topes.
Piratas leave from the north terminal several times per hour and cost
only 14 pesos. Piratas for La Barra leave the same terminal three times per day and charge 25 pesos.

The
embarcadero (dock) of Sontecomapan is the center of all boating activity on the laguna, including
excursions, taxi service and freight transport to isolated communities along the laguna and the south
coast.

Sontecomapan City has one budget hotel. Rancho Los Amigos, a mini resort accessible only by boat,
sits on a hill across from La Barra. Various ecotouristic enterprises are sprouting in other surrounding
communities, and various mini hotels are being planned.

The only accessible beach is at La Barra, 21 miles from Catemaco.
