Mexico is a statistician´s dream. There are more statistics available on every nuance of Mexican society
and geography than pesos to do anything about most of the findings.

I took the liberty of collating some statistical data of Los Tuxtlas from various sources, which, for me at
least, helps me to understand Los Tuxtlas.

The sources for the statistics can be found on the links page.

Population
This table contains some questionable statistics arising from the creation of the new municipio of
Tatahuicapan and Veracruz's spurt in population. It needs revision.
Social
These statistics reveal curious items like app. 15 teachers per doctor, around 100 US dollars budgeted per
person on a municipial level, and an abysmal literacy rate across all counties.

Land Use

Total area of the counties included in Los Tuxtlas is:
513,916 hectares = 5139 square kilometers = 1984 square miles, which is about half the size of Los Angeles County, a
little larger than the smallest US state Rhode Island, and somewhat larger than Mexico´s Distrito Federal (1479 miles2)

The actual geographic Sierra de Los Tuxtlas is considerably smaller, only occupying roughly 3900 km2, (1506 square
miles)

The Biosphere Reserve occupies 155,122 hectares (599 square miles), including 29,720 nuclear hectares (115 square
miles). That´s a good size ranch  in Australia or Texas.

The difference between total area and municipal area is 84,104 hectares.
Still need to find out where those hectares disappeared to.
