|The Casa de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen was a hotel, built in the late 1970's?, on the slopes of
the Cacahuateno hill overlooking Catemaco and its laguna. During Mexico's economic crisis in the late
1980's, the hotel went bankrupt and was sold to the catholic church.
The church at one point used the old hotel as a retirement home for priests, but now only functions a venue
for religious retreats and events. Its more than 40 guest rooms can house more than 100 visitors, its pool
has the most accessible spectacular view of Catemaco and the laguna, and its restaurant will seat almost
200. In 2008 a good size chapel was inaugurated.
18 emloyees are needed to maintain the grounds, including a forested area behind the villa.
Very little is know about the villa in Catemaco and there is no website or public address. Ask a friendly
priest, I guess.
