Playa Escondida & Playa Jicacal Catemaco, Veracruz
Playa Escondida houses a dilapidated hotel and other facilities which are non functional most of the year. The access road is a nightmare and not recommended to passenger cars. The surroundings are heavily forested and house one of the few wild Howler monkey troops in the Tuxtlas. The bird life is magnificent. Access to the beach is via a very slippery walk and ill maintained, crumbling concrete steps down to the beach. Nevertheless all the pain is worth it and the views are magnificent.
Playa Jicacal and Parador Icacos is actually a private ranch of more than 100 hectares which are for sale. The wide beach lies within a shallow bay book ended by rocky outcroppings, and most times of the year is idyllically desolate. The hotel consists of a row of rooms in very bad condition and a beach front restaurant with a very limited and infrequent menu. Parking for visitors is 30 pesos. I am told the hotel has been reconditioned Jun 08. Contact: (294) 942-0556
